The Sahyadris can seem intimidating, but they are also home to some of the most beautiful and accessible trails for those just starting out. Here are 10 treks perfect for beginners, offering stunning views without overwhelming challenges.
1. Lohagad Fort: The 'Iron Fort' is one of the easiest and most popular treks near Pune and Mumbai. A well-laid path and stone steps lead you to the top. The highlight is the 'Vinchu Kata' (Scorpion's Tail), a long, narrow spur offering panoramic views. Best during monsoon and post-monsoon.
2. Visapur Fort: Located right next to Lohagad, Visapur offers a slightly more adventurous route, famous for its 'waterfall trail' in the monsoon where you climb up through a gushing stream. The plateau on top is vast and scenic. Best during the monsoon.
3. Korigad Fort: An easy-to-climb fort near Lonavala's Aamby Valley. The trail is straightforward, and the main attraction is the massive plateau on top with a complete wall you can walk along, offering 360-degree views and two serene lakes. Best during monsoon and post-monsoon.
4. Tikona Fort: Also known as Vitandgad, this 'Triangle Fort' near Pawna Lake has a dominant pyramid shape. The final climb involves steep, narrow stone steps which add a bit of a thrill. The view of Pawna Lake and the surrounding forts from the top is magnificent. Best during post-monsoon and winter.
5. Rajmachi Fort: Rajmachi consists of two forts, Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. While the full trek from Kondhane caves is long, you can drive up to Udhewadi village and do the short, easy climb to the two citadels. It's famous for fireflies in late May and lush trails in the monsoon.
6. Prabalmachi: This is the base village for the challenging Kalavantin Durg and Prabalgad treks. However, the trek to Prabalmachi itself is a gentle, rewarding walk through the forest. You can camp here and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Best during all seasons, except peak summer.
7. Garbett Point, Matheran: A scenic trail that offers a cross-country feel. Starting from Diksal village near Bhivpuri, the trail winds through fields and climbs a gentle ridge to Garbett Point, offering stunning views of the Matheran plateau. Best during monsoon and winter.
8. Asherigad: Located in the Palghar region, this is a beautiful and relatively less-crowded trek. The trail goes through a dense forest, followed by a climb up well-carved steps. The fort has several water cisterns and remnants of structures. Best during post-monsoon and winter.
9. Peth Fort (Kothaligad): Famous for its unique thumb-like pinnacle with an internal spiral staircase carved to reach the top. The trek to the base village is easy, and the climb to the pinnacle is short but thrilling. The views from the top are incredible. Best during monsoon and post-monsoon.
10. Sudhagad Fort: A massive fort near Pali, often called the replica of Raigad. The climb is relatively easy, and the plateau on top is huge, with lakes, temples, and even a royal palace ruin. It's great for an overnight camping trip. Best during post-monsoon and winter.
