#Kalsubai#Highest Peak#Trek Guide#Bhandardara#Maharashtra

Standing tall at 1646 meters (5400 feet), Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra. Summiting this peak is a matter of pride for every trekker in the Sahyadris. The panoramic view from the top is simply unparalleled. Here’s your complete guide to the Kalsubai trek.
Why Trek to Kalsubai?
The main draw is, of course, the title of being at the highest point in the state. From the summit, you can see a stunning panorama of other famous forts like Alang, Madan, Kulang, Ratangad, and Harishchandragad. The trek itself is a thrilling experience, especially with the addition of steel ladders at the most challenging patches.
Best Time to Visit
September to February: This is the ideal period. The post-monsoon months offer lush green landscapes and clear skies, while winter provides pleasant weather and crisp views. The monsoon (June to August) is also popular for its misty and adventurous feel, but the trail is very slippery and crowded.
The Main Trekking Route from Bari Village
This is the most common and straightforward route.
- Base Village: Bari, located about 6 km from Bhandardara.
- How to Reach: From Mumbai/Pune, reach Igatpuri (the nearest major railway station). From Igatpuri, you can hire a shared taxi or take a state transport bus to Bari village.
- Trek Difficulty: Medium. The trail is well-marked but involves a continuous ascent. It takes about 3-4 hours to reach the summit.
- Trail Description: The trek starts from the Kalsubai temple in Bari. The initial path goes through fields and a small stream. The ascent then begins, with a mix of rocky patches and dirt tracks. The most exciting parts are the four steep steel ladders installed by the authorities to help trekkers navigate the most vertical rock faces. There are several small stalls along the way selling water, lemon juice, and snacks.
The Indore Route (For the Adventurous)
This is a more challenging and less-crowded route that requires a good level of fitness and trekking experience. It's a full-day trek and offers a more raw, natural experience.
Key Things to Know
- Water and Food: While there are stalls on the way, it's best to carry at least 2 liters of water and some snacks. Food is available in Bari village.
- Accommodation: Villagers in Bari offer basic homestay options. Camping is possible on the summit, but it can be very windy and cold.
- The Summit: The top is a small plateau with a temple dedicated to the local deity, Kalsubai Devi. The space is limited, so it can get crowded.
- Night Trek: Kalsubai is a very popular night trek, especially in winter. The goal is to reach the summit before dawn to witness a spectacular sunrise. A good headlamp is mandatory.
Tips for a Successful Trek
- Start early to avoid the afternoon sun.
- Be patient at the ladder sections, as there can be a queue. Let people coming down pass first.
- The ladders can be daunting for those with a fear of heights. Move slowly and maintain three points of contact.
- The weather can change quickly. Carry a light jacket or poncho, even on a clear day.
- Respect the local culture and the sanctity of the temple at the summit.
